Trek Birmingham is Expanding!

If you want to learn about and experience more of Birmingham’s natural environment, the online resource Trek Birmingham features some cool new additions.
There are four new recreation sites: Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Sims Ecoscape, The Birmingham Zoo and Turkey Creek Preserve. Visitors can also check out the “Do” section to learn what activities are available at each trek site and the “News” section for the latest additions.
Dig Even Deeper is a new section exhibiting documents such as maps, bird lists, local identification manuals and scientific reports. The Education Department at Birmingham-Southern College is adding new lessons plans for each site, aiding teachers in accomplishing state Course of Study Requirements. There’s also an Instagram feed, which features the latest action pictures. The program is funded through grants and donations to the Urban Environmental Studies Program at Birmingham-Southern College.
Francesca Gross, administrative coordinator of the program, said more additions are coming. “Over the next year, we’ll be launching even more public outdoor recreation areas, so we’re asking people to check in frequently on our updated site,” Gross said.
Key supporters for Trek Birmingham include Alabama Power, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, 3M and the Stephens Foundation. For more information go to www.trekbirmingham.com.
