Members of the Western Division Jasper Area Chapter of the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) recently helped beautify Capstone Community Gardens in Parrish.Capstonegardens splash3

On Saturday, May 18, APSO volunteers cleaned the grounds of the nonprofit Capstone Clinic’s gardens and planted crops. Prior to this project, it was estimated the crops yielded enough produce for hundreds of people each year. With the needed improvements completed, the garden should yield a larger harvest and more people will receive free produce from the clinic.

The work improved the Capstone Community Gardens in several ways. APSO volunteers:

  • Professionally built and installed three new raised beds, which will accommodate the elderly and handicapped.
  • Trimmed trees to improve visibility and allow more sunlight into the gardens.
  • Moved the compost bin and provided materials for a new compost system.
  • Relocated several bushes and trees.
  • Contributed to the beautification of the property with their revitalization work.

APSO’s mission is to improve the quality of life for Alabamians by developing and supporting projects that promote the core value of the company, such as meeting the critical needs of people, and promoting education, the environment and community enhancement. Volunteers participate in service projects all throughout the year at chapters across Alabama Power’s service territory, which includes the southernmost two-thirds of the state.
