As the summer is winding down, there’s still time for that one last getaway. Alabama has a lot of enjoyable and inexpensive weekend getaways.

Noccalula Falls
In Mobile, visit the Battleship USS Alabama Memorial Park and experience its 12 decks or explore the USS Drum, the oldest submarine on display.

About 20 miles south of Mobile is Fairhope, where visitors can enjoy one of five rivers or shop in the city’s own French Quarter. Stop by and enjoy Panini Pete’s, which has been featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” and “Guy’s Big Bite.”
In northeast Alabama, visit Tuscumbia, home to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, as well as Helen Keller’s birthplace museum. While you’re in town, stop by Palace Ice Cream & Sandwich shop for a treat.
Visit Muscle Shoals, less than 10 minutes away from Tuscumbia, and experience this historical music city, which starred in the 2013 documentary, “Muscle Shoals” about the “signature sound” produced by FAME Studios.

In Gadsden, Noccalula Falls Park is one of the state’s most popular attractions. Besides the featured water-fall, the park has campgrounds for RVs, cabins for rent and mini-golf.
For those with a sweet tooth, go to Greensboro for Pie Lab’s freshly baked pastries. The Empire Apple Pie was featured in Southern Living magazine as one of the best in the South. Lodge at the Muckle House Bed and Breakfast, a 1906 Victorian home that has been renovated but still has a unique Southern charm.

The state capital, Montgomery, is always a great place to visit. Explore one of the many museums or enjoy “Mary Poppins: a Broadway Musical” at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival until Aug. 10. While there, visit Riverwalk Stadium to catch a baseball game with the Montgomery Biscuits minor league team or catch a concert at the Riverwalk Amphitheatre. Experience the Alley Entertainment District for casual and formal dining, as well as boutiques. Go on the Harriott II Riverboat for a cruise on the Alabama River with fine dining and live entertainment fun for the entire family.
