Regions Readiness Rally splash 4

Alabama Power joined forces with organizations across the state to spread the word on disaster preparedness at the Regions Readiness Rally on Wednesday, Sept. 3 in downtown Birmingham. The event promoted September as National Preparedness Month and focused on preparing individuals for weather events, emergencies and other unforeseen hazards.

“For the second year, Regions and Alabama Power have partnered together to provide information to the community about disaster preparedness,” said Leroy Abrahams, North Central Alabama area president for Regions Bank. “We each have seen first-hand the impact of natural disasters on our communities, and with National Preparedness Month, we all have an opportunity to share information about how people can prepare not only for a disaster, but also for the aftermath.”

ABC 33/40 meteorologist James Spann was the guest speaker at the rally and provided readiness tips for weather disasters, such as the importance of purchasing a weather radio, a helmet for protection and hard-soled shoes for the aftermath.

“We are seeing now through research that a large number of injuries during storms could have been prevented by wearing a simple helmet,” Spann said.

Spann also touched on the Jan. 28 winter storm and the importance of being prepared for similar weather events in the future.

“Here’s my challenge to all of you,” Spann said. “I don’t know yet what the winter will be like, although there are forecasts that say the next several will be harsher. Are you ready?”

Other participating organizations included the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, Alabama Red Cross, Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency, United Way of Central Alabama and Operation HOPE.
