A half-century of celebrating historic Alabama homes

Alabama’s longest-running parade of historic homes wants to make history beyond just an anniversary milestone.
The 50th Eufaula Pilgrimage kicks off April 9, bringing thousands of visitors to the city and surrounding area. Built around a tour of historic homes, the festivities now extend to art shows, auctions and musical entertainment.
“The pilgrimage is Eufaula’s single most important tourism event of the year,” said Richard Hutto, Southeast Division vice president for Alabama Power. “It brings thousands of people here, with a significant boost to our local economy, more than $1 million.”
Thirteen homes are slated for the tour Friday through Sunday. Eight of those will be available for daytime tours and an additional five will be toured by candlelight. In addition, the Pilgrimage Antiques Show, an old favorite, returns after a three-year hiatus. A baker’s dozen of dealers from seven states will fill a 10,000-square-foot facility with antiques for sale.
“The dealers will be bringing everything from furniture, cut glass, silver, estate jewelry, unique linens and more,” said Pam Snead, executive director of the Eufaula Heritage Association. “The response this year has been incredible.”
The headlining musical guest – Act of Congress – performs Thursday night at the Eufaula City Auditorium. Voted one of the Must-See Acts in Alabama in 2011, the Birmingham-based group features “an organic sound that combines hook-laden melodies, compelling songwriting and intelligent acoustic instrumentation,” according to one national music review.
