Major hurricanes that threatened Alabama: Frances among top 10 costliest

In recognition of the start of hurricane season 2015, we’re revisiting some of the major storms that have affected the Gulf region over the past 90 years. Today, we take a look at Hurricane Frances.

Highest wind level: 145 mph
Five hurricanes made landfall in the U.S. in 2004; Frances was one of them. The slow-moving storm struck Florida on Sept. 5 with winds over 100 mph. It then moved on to Alabama, where it weakened to a tropical depression before moving northward. Still, the storm was dangerous, spawning over 100 tornadoes. It ranks among the top 10 costliest Atlantic hurricanes in history.
