Major hurricanes that threatened Alabama: Andrew devastates south Florida

In recognition of the start of hurricane season 2015, we’re revisiting some of the major storms that have affected the Gulf region over the past 90 years. Today, we take a look at Hurricane Andrew.
Hurricane Andrew
Landfall: August 24, 1992
Level: Category 5
U.S. Deaths: 23 *
Highest wind level: 175 mph
Hurricane Andrew is one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history. In Florida, it left nearly 200,000 people homeless and 1.4 million without power. Peak wind speeds could not be measured because the wind destroyed the instruments. Later, the hurricane hit Louisiana as a Category 3, but with enough strength to destroy 13 oil platforms, kill 182 million fish in the Atchafalaya River Basin, and cause $200 million in damage to the sugar crop.
