Woodlawn Movie

You can’t miss “Woodlawn” beginning Friday, Oct. 16. The film is the inspiring true story about Tony Nathan, a gifted high school football player from Woodlawn High School. It focuses on racial tension that ignites in the 1970s and changes his life and the lives of the people around him. Locate a theater near you or watch the trailer.

 

Jason Isbell Concert

Country singers Sturgill Simpson and Brandy Clark are opening for alternative country-rock singer and songwriter Jason Isbell Oct. 15 at 7:50 p.m. at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater. In 2014, Isbell won album of the year, artist of the year and song of the year from the American Music Awards. He is a native of Green Hill in Lauderdale County. For ticket information, click here.

A Spiritual Journey: Music from the Underground Railroad

Operatic soprano Kathleen Battle and jazz pianist Joel Martin will perform Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. in the Jemison Concert Hall of the Alys Stephens Center.The Oakwood University Aeolians Choir will accompany the singers on some of America’s favorite Negro spirituals including “Go Down, Moses” and “Swing Low.” To find out more about this performance, visit the Alys Stephens website.

Komen Race for the Cure

Come out and celebrate with thousands of people in the largest series of 5K runs and fitness walks in the world. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will be in downtown Birmingham at Linn Park on Oct 17. You will get information about breast cancer awareness, including early detection, mammograms, self-exams and other pertinent details about the disease. Follow this link for registration.

Bluegrass on the Blackwater

Experience some of Jasper’s best country bluegrass entertainment Oct. 16-17. This two-day event will feature Band of Ruhks, Larry Cordle and other performers. Barktoberfest

Bring out your pets to Barktoberfest Oct. 17 at the Helena Amphitheater and watch them play in an off-leash area. This festival will feature celebrity dogs such as Woody Clarence, Gwendolyn, Willow and Grumplestein. You will get to see the Fetch truck and hear how it began. Barktoberfest is a one-of a-kind festival for the entire family.
