It started on the golf course and ended on the gridiron and in between the 74th Annual Magic City Classic weekend brought fans, friends, family and celebrities together to enjoy multiple events in Birmingham.
Celebrity cook Gina Neely, who made her first visit to Birmingham for the Magic City Classic Expo and a cooking demonstration at the Alabama Power and Seafood Nutrition Partnership booth, said in an interview that she leaves impressed.
“This seems to be a town that’s really into their food and different things and willing to learn about new things. A lot of cities, they sort of rest on their laurels and what they have,” Neely said. “The energy was amazing. Everybody was hyped up even though it was early in the morning. That really says a lot about your city.”
Neely wasn’t the only celebrity spotted during the weekend. Tom Joyner and Rickey Smiley aired their radio shows from Birmingham and Common performed at the Classic Soiree at the Birmingham Museum of Art. The Magic City Classic celebrity ambassador this year was Anthony Anderson, star of television’s “black-ish” and other TV shows and movies.
The Alabama Classic Foundation Classic Invitational golf tournament brought dozens of business and community leaders out to raise money for the foundation.
Neely said she leaves after her first visit with a new view of Birmingham.
“This is my first time to Birmingham. I’ll tell you, I’m impressed,” she said. “I can feel the love here, the love and pride of your city.”
