Alabama Power’s MIX initiative to engage young professionals and millennials had another successful outing in Birmingham this month and now may be destined for other parts of the state.
The second MIX Night Out this month at Saturn Birmingham in Avondale drew more than 260 people for the “Battle of the Boards” event to support the junior boards of Birmingham Railroad Park and Freshwater Land Trust. B. Brian was spinning songs much of the night until the band CDBD took the stage and performed.
The Freshwater Land Trust won, raising $3,400 compared to Railroad Park’s $1,900. The Alabama Power Foundation contributed $2,500 to the winning team.
“This is the first time in my lifetime that I have felt the energy in this city,” Nick Sellers, vice president of Regulatory & Corporate Affairs at Alabama Power, told the crowd. “People are so proud to be a part of it and it’s because of you. It’s because of the stuff you’re doing and your involvement. We want to be the utility and energy company that you can be proud of and our kids and grandkids can be proud of.”
Antwon Ervin from the Railroad Park junior board said MIX has provided a connection to the various entities creating change in Birmingham.
“MIX is doing more good and positive things in the community,” he said. “MIX really is a gateway that is bringing the different groups together and unifying our efforts.”
MIX kicked off last month with its first night out at Trim Tab Brewing Company, raising funds for Red Mountain Park and encouraging those in attendance to support a cleanup day at the park. MIX will continue to hold night out events and support other opportunities for people to get involved in supporting organizations and communities.
Deon Gordon, director of business growth at REV Birmingham, said the change is palpable in Birmingham.
“Birmingham is at a point in history where it can write the next chapter of its history,” he said.
Sellers said MIX has been so successful in Birmingham the company is looking to engage millennials and young professionals in other parts of the state.
“Our hope is we can bottle the energy we’re feeling here in Birmingham and carry it or duplicate it throughout Alabama,” he said. “Because in the end, we all want a better Birmingham and a better Alabama.”
