James Spann: Cool days, cold nights across Alabama

DRY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: The sky is sunny over much of North and Central Alabama this afternoon, although clouds linger over South and parts of East Alabama. Temperatures are 10-15 degrees below average; most communities north and east of Birmingham are still in the mid 40s at mid-afternoon.

Temperatures

Tonight will be cold; we project a low between 30 and 35 degrees for most places early tomorrow; colder pockets will visit the 20s.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Not much change; we are forecasting sunny cool days and clear cold nights. The high tomorrow will be in the upper 50s, and then close to 60 degrees Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The low early Saturday will be in the mid 30s… and Sunday morning’s low will be close to 40.

NEXT WEEK: A vigorous short wave will bring a chance of showers to Alabama Monday; moisture will be very limited, so rain amounts should be light (under 1/2 inch). Then, the rest of the week looks dry with seasonal temperatures.

The GFS is advertising a good rain event late in the following weekend (December 12-13)… see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Perfect weather for the “Super 7” Alabama high school championship games this week at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. The sky will stay clear through tomorrow; daytime temperatures will peak in the mid to upper 50s tomorrow; the night games will feature temperatures in the 40s.

Saturday’s SEC Championship game (Alabama vs Florida) will be played in the Georgia Dome, but for fans headed to the game, the weather outside will be just fine with a good supply of sunshine and an afternoon high around 60 in Atlanta.
