The Christmas week rain event continues to provide substantially elevated flows for the entire Alabama Power hydroelectric system. Alabama Power crews opened spillways at multiple dams on Christmas Day. They remained opened as lake levels continued to rise into the weekend.

As a result, Smith, Weiss, and Logan Martin lakes are currently above their summer pool elevations. According to the National Weather Service forecasts, a significant amount of rainfall is expected for the power company lake basins. These additional rains have the potential to cause additional rises in the current lake elevations, which could impact residences and business located along Alabama Power reservoirs.

“Alabama Power will continue to closely monitor conditions on the lakes and manage resources carefully,” the company said in a release. “Individuals with boats and other water-related equipment and facilities should always be alert to changing conditions on Alabama Power reservoirs and be prepared to take the necessary steps to protect their property.”
