The biggest boat show is in Birmingham

Cool your jets at the Birmingham Sport and Boat Show at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex East Exhibition Hall through Jan. 24. View 250,000 square feet of the finest speed and fishing boats, motors, fishing gear, guides, outfitters and outdoor gear. Tickets are $10.

 

 

 

 

Experience romance at ‘La Traviata’ opera

Step into18th-century Paris during Opera Birmingham’s showing of the powerful romantic drama “La Traviata” on Jan. 22 and Jan. 24. Samford University’s Leslie S. Wright Fine Arts Center provides the perfect platform for the showings on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

The annual Red Shoe Run starts at SoHo Square, Homewood.

Get happy feet at the Red Shoe Run 

Lace up your big red floppy clown … uh, running shoes, and meet at SoHo Square in Homewood on Jan. 23 for Ronald McDonald’s Red Shoe Run. Donate $55 to run in the 10-mile event, $35 for the 5k and $20 for the 1-mile fun run. Money raised supports Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama. Register at the Ronald McDonald House on Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The last registration is at Rosewood Hall in SoHo Square on Saturday at 6:30 a.m.

Revel in the Alabama Decorative Arts Symposium 

Come enjoy a menu designed by renowned Alabama chef Frank Stitt and be the first to view the Alabama Decorative Arts Symposium exhibit “New Discoveries,” on Jan. 21. The showing is at the Loeb Reception Center at 301 Columbus St. from 5:30 to 8 p.m. See the exhibit, then walk across the road to the reception at the Ware-Farley-Hood Mansion, 450 North Hull St.

Alabamians are very good at making beautiful things with their hands. Celebrate our long tradition of ingenuity with The Landmarks Foundation’s premier event at the Alabama Department of Archives and History on Friday, Jan. 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Featured speakers will discuss “Alabama’s Traditional Pottery;” “Alabama Maps: New finds, New Resources,” and “Alabama Silver,” among other topics. Inspire your inner artist with a visit to the Mobile Museum of Art’s showing “A Passion for the Past: New acquisitions from the Schoenknecht.” See American and
European glass ceramics and arts and crafts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets for adults are $12; seniors, $10; students, $8; and children under 6 are free.

Hear a country-and-gospel concert in Dothan 

Enjoy a family friendly country-and-gospel concert with an open mic session on Saturday, Jan. 23 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., courtesy of the Alabama Music Association. The event will be held at the Woodmen of the World building at 1348 Hartford Hwy. in Dothan. Admission is $5 for ages 13 and up.
