The study found that someone 55 or older heads 42 percent of all households nationwide. The American Community Survey found 48 million households across the U.S. are headed by individuals over age 55.

The Yellowhammer State falls in line with the national data, showing that 43.7 percent of all households in Alabama are headed by someone 55 or older, ranking Alabama No. 14 nationally.

With a household count of 1.8 million, 661,548 Alabama owners are age 55 or older and 143,253 renters are older than 55.

Leading the pack nationwide is West Virginia at 48.3 percent, with Florida at 47.7 percent. Maine has a 47.1 percent rate, while Hawaii has a 46.2 percentage and Vermont is at 46.1 percent.
