James Spann: Big rains stay to the west of Alabama

CALM MORNING: A have a mix of sun and clouds across Alabama early this morning with temperatures in the 60s; nothing on radar across our state. But, to the west, big rains continue to fall…
A decent part of Alabama will stay dry today; best chance of rain will come over the western counties later today and early tonight, mainly west of a line from Huntsville to Tuscaloosa to Demopolis. Temperatures once again rise well into the 70s, with a few spots possibly touching the 80 degree mark.
TOMORROW/SATURDAY: The overall weather won’t change much. The axis of heaviest rain should stay west of Alabama; no doubt we could see a few showers, but they will be most likely over the western counties of the state. The sun could peek out at times, and afternoon temperatures will be in the mid to upper 70s. Much better news for those planning outdoor events.
SATURDAY NIGHT/SUNDAY: The upper low that has been over Mexico will finally lift out as it weakens and fills. Sure looks like the best chance of rain statewide will come during the time frame, especially from about 6:00 p.m. Saturday through 12:00 noon Sunday. A few thunderstorms will be involved, but for now severe weather and flooding is not expected in our state.
NEXT WEEK: We will mention the risk of scattered showers Monday, but the weather looks dry Tuesday and Wednesday with warm afternoons and pleasant nights. A cold front will bring the next chance of showers and storms around Thursday March 17; see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
AT THE BEACH: Best chance of showers and storms through the weekend will be at places like Dauphin Island, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Pensacola. The weather will be drier to the east for places like Destin and Panama City Beach. And, don’t forget potential for dangerous rip tides will remain very high. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.
STORM SPOTTER TRAINING: We are offering basic SKYWARN training at several locations across North/Central Alabama in March, followed by the big event, Storm Spotter Xtreme on Saturday, April 9 at the BJCC from 9am to 2pm. This will feature both the basic and advanced SKYWARN classes, along with a session from Kevin Laws of the Birmingham NWS office. And, if you come, you get free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show, going on at the BJCC that same day. There is no cost and no need to register. Just show up with a curious mind. Kids 10 and older will also enjoy this if they love weather and want to learn more. Please help us make the severe weather warning process better!
We will be in Cullman next Tuesday.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
