Alabama Power’s Carla Davis named national employee of the year

Alabama Power Communications Specialist Carla Davis has been named one of 10 national Employees of the Year by CAREERS & the disABLED magazine.

Davis, who has worked at Alabama Power for nearly 28 years, was honored during a banquet at Westin Copley Place Hotel in Boston March 31 during the magazine’s 24th annual awards ceremony.

President and Publisher Tamara Flaum-Dreyfuss said Davis received the award “for her professional and advocacy efforts on behalf of people with disabilities in the workplace and in the community.” Davis’ recognition will appear in an upcoming issue of the magazine.

“Carla overcomes the challenges of visual impairment each and every day, while inspiring others to be their best,” said Vice President of Public Relations Stephanie Kirijan Cooper. “She is a smart, creative and ambitious team member who adds tremendous value to the public relations organization at Alabama Power.”

Davis is a senior writer and assistant editor for Powergrams magazine. She is an important content contributor to the company’s multiple external and internal digital platforms.

“I am very honored to receive this award from a magazine that has led the way for many years in promoting the employment of people with disabilities,” Davis said. “I share this magazine’s vision, which is to see more and more people with disabilities in the workplace. I also want to thank Alabama Power for supporting me and giving me the chance to show what I can do for the company.”

Davis has received multiple local and regional writing awards from the International Association of Business Communicators. She was selected as Disabled Employee of the Year in 2012 by the Birmingham Area Governor’s Committee on Employment. In 2015, she was featured in CAREERS & the disABLED magazine.

Because of her many years of experience in the corporate world, Davis is an advocate for visually impaired students and young adults who are planning for their careers. At the request of the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services, she has repeatedly shared her story with these future job-seekers. Through these presentations, she has offered career advice and direction and shared the knowledge and experience she has gained while overcoming obstacles in the workplace. She has made presentations for the National Federation of the Blind of Alabama and at elementary schools.

Davis graduated summa cum laude from Samford University in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. She is a member of the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO). On behalf of APSO, she has coordinated internal and external communications for four Habitat for Humanity Houses built by APSO volunteers. She is a past president of the Alabama Power chapter of Toastmasters and held other club and district positions with the organization. She has sung in the choir at her church for most of her life.
