Habitat for Humanity Greater Birmingham has given a name to a neighborhood planned for 19 acres in East Lake, the former site of the entertainment park Cascade Plunge that occupied the land from the 1920s to the 1990s.
“Cascade Parc” will include up to 40 new, affordable homes and a community amenity. Repairs to nearby owner-occupied homes are also planned as part of the effort that is estimated to be a $6 million investment over the next three to five years.
“The spring-fed Olympic-sized pool, event center and lodge from Cascade Plunge were far beyond repair when we purchased the land, but fond memories remain from its heyday,” said Charles Moore, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Greater Birmingham. “More than naming the neighborhood in honor of its past, we as a community are bringing new life to this area by helping local families build their homes.”

Development of Cascade Parc will begin Saturday, when up to 50 women will work on the East Lake property from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The initiative is part of Habitat for Humanity’s annual international Women Build week, sponsored by Lowe’s.
“We have 36 women committed so far, so we’re still inviting individual women and co-workers to start this transformation of the East Lake property,” Moore said.
Women who want to volunteer Saturday can visit www.habitatbirmingham.org to learn more and sign up.

The neighborhood’s first 15 homes will be built Aug. 25 to Sept.1, during Habitat Birmingham’s Home Builders Blitz. Local construction professionals will volunteer their time to construct homes together with the future homeowners.
Habitat Birmingham is actively seeking additional sponsors and grants for the funding of the development, and applications for Habitat for Humanity homeownership are now open. To apply, visit www.habitatbirmingham.org.
