Kick off the summer with music, food, fun and some special salutes to military heroes in this edition of Can’t Miss Alabama.
Take yourself out to the ball games at the Hoover Met
The SEC Baseball Tournament at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium doesn’t hit the final inning until Sunday, so there will be daily opportunities to cheer on the conference’s best teams. Tickets range from $28 to $92, depending on the game and the seats. Start times are 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Thursday, 3 p.m. Friday, noon Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Look to the skies at the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic
The Alabama Jubilee brings crafts, music, food, fireworks, a tractor show, an auto show and more than 60 hot air balloons to Point Mallard in Decatur. Events are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Watch the balloons race and float, or take a tethered balloon flight yourself.
Check out the walking, breathing, life-sized dinosaurs at Jurassic Quest
More than 50 realistic animatronic dinosaurs making their first visit to Montgomery are the stars of Jurassic Quest at the Montgomery Convention Center at the Renaissance this weekend. The event also includes rides, tours, digs and other activities. Hours are 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets range from $15 to $24 depending on age and the activities included, with discounts for military families.
Help yourself to some hot music and food while helping wounded vets
The 24th Memorial Day Music Festival at John Hunt Park in Huntsville has expanded from its original blues roots to add acts such as Con Funk Shun, Dru Hill and Ginuwine to the mix. Gates open at 11 a.m. Saturday and noon Sunday, with vendors offering hot Southern dishes, arts and crafts, novelties and various activities. Tickets are $45 per day or $60 for an advance weekend pass, with a portion of proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Family Foundation.
Head out to Barber Motorsports to see decades of cool vintage bikes
The Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s Lucas Oil Vintage Motorcycle Classic roars into Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingam Friday through Sunday. Bikes of all makes, models and types from 1981 and earlier will be on display, and the event offers more than 500 swap meet vendors, daily road runs, tech seminars, children’s games and more. Tickets are $15 a day or $30 for a three-day pass.
Go crazy with country chart-topper Lee Brice
Lee Brice has an impressive list of No. 1 and top 10 country hits, including the Billboard chart record-breaker “Love Like Crazy.” He’ll be reeling them out Saturday in a 7 p.m. show at The Wharf Amphitheater in Orange Beach. Tickets range from $24 to $253.
Remember fallen heroes and honor living ones at The American Village
The American Village in Montevallo is always a special place to spend a patriotic holiday, and its proximity to the National Veterans Cemetery makes it an especially appropriate place to be on Memorial Day. Monday’s events include musical tributes, historical re-enactments, wreath-laying ceremonies and special tours. Admission is $5, with no charge for veterans and active military personnel. Events are scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday.
Honor those who served with two moving special observances
The Alabama National Cemetery on Alabama Highway 119 in Montevallo will hold a flag placement ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday and a Memorial Day Observance at 9 a.m. Monday to honor the memory of those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Pay tribute to the Armed Forces in an authentic military setting
Fort Morgan Historical Site in Gulf Shores will hold a Memorial Day Tribute on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Historical interpreters in U.S. Army uniforms from different eras will give tours of the fort, and artillery and small arms presentations are scheduled.
