Birmingham SlossFest profile: Los Colognes

Los Colognes will play Saturday at SlossFest this year. (contributed)
Performer: Los Colognes
Type of music: Rock
About: Jay Rutherford (guitar, vocals), Aaron “Mort” Mortenson (drums, percussion), Gordon Persha (bass), Micah Hulscher (keyboards), Chuck Foster (keyboards) and Wojtek Krupka (guitar) are the Nashville-based band Los Colognes. The band gained attention with its critically acclaimed debut album, “Working Together,” in 2013 and followed it up with the impressive “Dos” last year. The band lists JJ Cale, Grateful Dead
performing live and Dire Straits among its influences and says it wants to be known as a jam band but one that puts an emphasis on lyrics and songwriting.
“So many jam bands I encountered in high school were just stoner rock,” Rutherford says on the band’s website, “but there weren’t any songs there, and the lyrics were garbage. Give me Dylan any day. But now, taking these sorts of Cale-like arrangements and opening up the songs live, not playing the same eight songs the same way every night … it is just having fun and not necessarily jamming for the sake of jamming.”
Los Colognes is on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
