About: The high-energy band The Joy Formidable was formed in 2009 in North Wales. The trio, made up of lead singer and guitarist Ritzy Bryan, bass player and backup vocalist Rhydian Dafydd and drummer Matt Thomas, has been characterized by Rolling Stone as “wickedly bracing and Himalaya-huge.” They released their first album, “The Big Roar,” in 2011.

The group has performed on both sides of the Atlantic and has supported internationally known artists including Sir Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters and The Black Keys. With its recent return to its native North Wales, the band started their own record label, C’mon Lets Drift, and opened a studio, the Red Brick. The members wrote and recorded their latest album, “Hitch,” at the studio and are showcasing it during a North American tour. The band’s new material also includes its recording of the theme from the TV show “Twin Peaks” and an emotionally charged score for the short film “Floating,” a love story featuring a character made from balloons. Birmingham music fans will get their chance to hear The Joy Formidable at SlossFest in July.
