Benefiting the Freshwater Land Trust‘s mission of stewardship of Alabama lands over the past 20 years, the nonprofit will hold its 8th Annual Land Aid presented by Alabama Power at Avondale Brewery on Friday, Sept. 16.

Headlining this year’s concert is acclaimed singer and songwriter Pete Yorn.

Currently touring for his critically acclaimed new album, “ArrangingTime,” the Los Angeles (by way of New Jersey) artist gained international recognition after his debut album “musicforthemorningafter” in 2001 and is also known for “Break Up,” a 2009 collaborative album with actress Scarlett Johansson. Yorn’s life experiences are characterized through his music, running the gamut from elegiac folk and wasteland blues to upbeat, synth-kissed rock.

The Freshwater Land Trust is celebrating 20 years of conserving and connecting open spaces critical to the protection of rivers and streams that provide recreational opportunities throughout Central Alabama. Proceeds from Land Aid will further fuel its mission.

“Over the past eight years, thousands of Land Aid attendees have supported our mission, resulting in more than 11,000 acres of land preserved. However, what’s more exciting is looking to the next 20 years,” said Libba Vaughan, Freshwater Land Trust executive director. “We thrive on partnership and collaboration, and that’s why we are so excited about the opportunities on the horizon for our next big project. Community buy-in is so important – we need your input and support. Land Aid is a fun way to support a great cause and be a part of the next generation of conservationists.”

The Freshwater Land Trust secures land with the help of many partnerships serving eight counties. Through the efforts of the trust staff, board of directors and junior board, well-loved green spaces throughout Central Alabama have been preserved, including Red Mountain Park, Seven Springs, Turkey Creek Nature Preserve and Birmingham’s new Rotary Trail.

The trust serves as a steward to lands that enhance water quality. It preserves open spaces in Jefferson, Shelby, Blount, Chilton, Bibb, St. Clair, Tuscaloosa and Walker counties.

Land Aid is hosted by the Freshwater Land Trust junior board, a diverse group of young professionals who promote the organization’s mission throughout the community and region.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. To purchase tickets or learn more about Land Aid, please visit http://www.freshwaterlandtrust.org/.
