Apple CEO Tim Cook and others are honored for continuing the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
It was a tone of celebration, remembrance and honor.
April 4 marked 50 years since the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was 39 at the time, and considered one of the forefront leaders of the civil rights movement.
The day was marked with ceremonies remembering Dr. King all over the country.
Birmingham also hosted programs to mark Wednesday courtesy of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, of which Dr. King was the founding president.

Alabama native and Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke to an audience at the Sixth Avenue Baptist Church early in the day, and that night, Cook was one of four honorees to receive a Keeper of the Dream Award. That ceremony was held at the Sheraton and honored individuals who continue Dr. King’s legacy, as demonstrated in their lives and work.
There were three other honorees:
- Isabel Rubio, Keeper of the Dream Civil Rights Award
- DeJuana Thompson, Keeper of the Dream Voting RIghts Award
- Bob Dickerson, Keeper of the Dream Economic Justice Award
Community leaders say the tributes to Dr. King and others were a fitting honor for his legacy.
