No matter how you slice it, Touch of Home Bakery is the place for pies and breads.

Linda Dirks said it was her parents’ lack of a green thumb that made the Black Belt bakery possible.

After failing to make a go of farming, Dirks said her parents decided to start a bakery in 1993 when her mother was 68 years old. After her father passed away, Dirks and her husband, Clinton, decided to keep it going.

“It was hard to let it go out of the family after all of her hard work,” she said.

Touch of Home Bakery has risen to the list of 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die from Alabama NewsCenter on Vimeo.

Her mother, now 93, still comes in a couple of days a week to answer the phone.

The pie recipes are Dirks’ mother’s and Dirks has worked up the breads, rolls and pastries over the years. The cinnamon rolls are a big seller.

Touch of Home also serves sandwiches and lunch.

But it’s the baked goods that earned a spot on the Alabama Tourism Department’s list of 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die.
