Look to Vulcan Park, the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival and the Birmingham International Street Fair in Can’t Miss Alabama

Spring brings plenty of outdoor festivities.

Taste of Five Points at Vulcan Park and Museum

Vulcan Park and Museum is teaming up with the Five Points Alliance to present Taste of Five Points Tuesday, May 8 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will showcase the Five Points district’s restaurants, retailers and organizations. Advance tickets are $30 for an individual, $50 for a couple, $20 for students with a valid I.D. and children 12 and under are free. Participating restaurants include: Ocean, 5 Points Public House, Farm Burger, Ranelli’s, Delta Blues, Sleek Sports Bar & Grill, Dreamland BBQ, Brennan’s, Taj India, Highlands Bar & Grill, Chez Fon Fon, Bottega, Mellow Mushroom, Dave’s Pub, Little Italy, Chick-fil-A, Blaze Pizza, Freddy’s Wine Bar, Insomnia Cookies and Chicken Salad Chick.

Entertainment includes singers and songwriters, poets and storytellers. Chanda Temple, co-author of the cookbook “Magic City Cravings,” will be available to sell and sign cookbooks at 6 p.m.

Decorators’ ShowHouse

The Decorators’ ShowHouse is one of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s largest annual fundraisers. This year’s home is on Cherokee Road in Mountain Brook. The 2018 ShowHouse sits on 2 acres, and has five bedrooms, six bathrooms and a pool. The event is through Sunday, May 13 (Mother’s Day). Tickets are $25.

Parking for the event will be at the Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church at 3405 Brookwood Road in Birmingham.

Shuttle service is provided to the house.

Bernstein-Mahler Celebration at UAB

Pay homage to two noted musicians: Leonard Bernstein and Gustav Mahler. The Alabama Symphony Orchestra begins with Bernstein’s joyful “West Side Story Symphonic Dance and ends with one of Bernstein’s favorite pieces, Mahler’s first symphony, aptly nicknamed “The Titan.” The performance is at 8 p.m. May 4-5 at UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.

This program is a part of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s 2017-2018 Masterworks Series.

Tickets start at $24, with student, teacher, armed forces and other discounts.

Cullman’s Strawberry Fest

Cullman Strawberry Fest will feature live music, arts and crafts, vendors, rides, vintage and car show, children’s activities and fresh strawberries. The festival is Saturday, May 5.

Birmingham International Street Fair

Here is your chance to enjoy a multicultural fair. Vendors will showcase handcrafted global items, which includes jewelry and other products. See a variety of dance performances and choose from an array of foods including Italian, Mexican, Cajun, Vietnamese, Eastern and Ethiopian cuisine, desserts and dishes.

The event is Saturday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Avondale Brewing Company.

‘The Miracle Worker’

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival presents “The Miracle Worker” by William Gibson through Sunday, May 6. Learn how Annie Sullivan is hired as a governess and helps Helen Keller overcome her disabilities.

2018 Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival

Make plans for an adventurous weekend at the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival. The activities are balloon flights, arts and crafts, glows and tethered rides. Follow this link to the complete schedule.

The hours are 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, May 4 and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 5. If the weather and wind permit, balloons will be visible at dusk and at dawn.

The festival is at 210 Cater Lee Way between 998 West Section Street in Foley.

WhistleStop BBQ Festival

It is another WhistleStop Festival & Rocket City Barbecue Cook-Off weekend. You will not want to miss the live entertainment, food competitions, kids zone and family fun.

The proceeds will benefit local educational programs and the Early Works Children’s Museum.

The cookoff is May 4-5 in Huntsville.

The hours are Friday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
