Chances are if you’ve been to the Old Barn Restaurant in Goshen, you heard about it from someone.
As Manager Julia Walker says, it’s “off the beaten path” and most of their customers learn about them “from word of mouth.”
Chances are also great that that mouth was still salivating while talking about the Rum Bread Pudding. It’s so special that it has made the Alabama Tourism Department’s list of 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama.
Walker said surviving the loss of business due to COVID-19 can be difficult for a small, out-of-the-way family restaurant like the Old Barn. It’s in trying times like these where community shines through.
“I would love to give a shoutout to our customers,” she said. “If I wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have a business.”
The Old Barn had to adjust from a sit-down restaurant that plated most of its dishes to a carryout-only business, packing every plate to go. When the state allowed for half-occupancy in restaurants, the staff had to adjust again.
But the Rum Bread Pudding has always been one item that customers might be inclined to get to-go, depending on how full they were. Some customers even buy it by the whole pan to take home with them.
