DRY WEATHER CONTINUES: Today will be another mostly sunny day for Alabama. We project a high between 78 and 84 degrees this afternoon; the average high for Birmingham on Oct. 15 is 76. A cold front will pass through the state tonight with some clouds, but no rain. Friday will be breezy and much cooler, with a high in the mid 60s despite sunshine in full supply.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: For some, Saturday morning will be the coldest so far this season. We expect lows between 34 and 42 degrees for most communities with potential for a little light frost in colder spots. Saturday will be a bright, sunny day with low humidity and a high around 70 degrees. Sunday’s high will be in the mid 70s with a good supply of sunshine. A delightful autumn weekend.

NEXT WEEK: A cold front will hang up north of Alabama, over Tennessee, early in the week, and our weather looks warm and dry for at least the first half of the week, with highs in the low 80s. We could see a few isolated showers Thursday or Friday, but really meaningful rain looks unlikely at this point.

TROPICS: A weak area of low pressure near the Lesser Antilles continues to produce a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms well to the east of its center. Strong upper-level winds are expected to continue to inhibit development while the system moves west-northwestward over the next couple of days. Regardless of development, the system could produce locally heavy rainfall across portions of the Lesser Antilles, the Virgin Islands and Puerto
Rico over the next few days.

The National Hurricane Center also expects broad low-pressure areas to form southeast of Bermuda and over the southwest Caribbean over the next five days; the chance of development, for now, is low.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Friday night will be cool and dry for high school football games across Alabama. The sky will be clear, with temperatures falling from the upper 50s at kickoff into the upper 40s by the final whistle.

Saturday, Auburn travels to South Carolina to take on the Gamecocks in Columbia (11 a.m. CT kickoff). The sky will be sunny, with temperatures rising from 62 at kickoff into the mid 60s by the fourth quarter.

UAB will host Western Kentucky at Legion Field Saturday (12:30 p.m. kickoff). Look for sunshine in full supply, with temperatures rising from 66 at kickoff to near 70 by the final whistle.

Alabama hosts Georgia at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday (7 p.m. kickoff). The sky will be clear, with temperatures falling from near 65 at kickoff into the mid 50s by the end of the game.

ON THIS DATE IN 1984: The Monday Night Football game in Denver, Colorado, was played in a raging blizzard. Fifteen inches of snow fell, with up to 34 inches reported in the nearby mountains. The Air Force Academy canceled classes for the first time in its recorded history.
