James Spann: Another mild afternoon ahead for Alabama
James Spann has the Alabama forecast for Friday and the weekend ahead from Alabama NewsCenter on Vimeo.
ONE MORE DRY DAY: There is a dense fog advisory across the southern half of Alabama today, where visibilities are very restricted. This fog should dissipate later this morning. Otherwise, today will be partly to mostly sunny with a high between 67 and 72 degrees this afternoon. The average high for Birmingham on Dec. 11 is 57. Clouds will increase tonight.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A cold front will bring a batch of showers to the state Saturday; it looks like the best chance of rain will come during the morning and early afternoon. There’s no risk of severe storms and probably little thunder. Rain amounts should be less than a quarter-inch, and the day certainly won’t be a washout. The sky will be mostly cloudy and the high will be in the mid 60s. Showers could linger over south Alabama Saturday night as the front stalls out there.
Much of Sunday looks dry for north and central Alabama, although showers remain possible over the southern counties. A wave of low pressure will develop on the front and will bring widespread rain statewide Sunday night into early Monday morning. Rain amounts of around 1 inch are likely; we’re not expecting any thunder for most of the state. The high Sunday will be in the 60s.
NEXT WEEK: The sky becomes partly sunny Monday afternoon and the day will be cooler, with a high in the low to mid 50s. Most of Tuesday will be dry, but another disturbance will bring some risk of scattered light rain to the northern third of the state Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Wednesday will be colder; some places across north Alabama will hold in the 40s all day. Thursday and Friday will be dry and mostly sunny with a high in the 50s. The next chance of rain most likely will come at some point that following weekend (Dec. 19-20).
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Saturday, Alabama will take on Arkansas in Fayetteville (11 a.m. kickoff). The weather looks dry but cold. The sky will be cloudy with temperatures rising from 39 degrees at kickoff into the low 40s during the second half.
UAB plays Rice in Houston Saturday (11 a.m kickoff). The sky will be sunny with temperatures rising from 66 at kickoff to near 70 by the second half.
Saturday evening, Auburn travels to Starkville to take on Mississippi State (kickoff at 6:30). The sky will be mostly fair with temperatures falling from the low 50s at kickoff into the mid 40s by the final whistle.
ON THIS DATE IN 1961: It was the middle day of a three-day severe weather event for the Deep South that included 13 tornadoes. An F-3 tornado tore through Jacksonville in Calhoun County, causing significant damage to the campus of Jacksonville State University. The tornado was down for about three miles; there were no fatalities.
