‘Glow Wild’ at the Birmingham Zoo
Enjoy a larger-than-life illuminated experience at the Birmingham Zoo with Glow Wild: An Animal Lantern Celebration. Captivate your children’s imaginations with stunning lantern creations of wildlife from around the world. The zoo entertains guests with hundreds of marvelous animal shapes – cheetahs, elephants, pandas, polar bears and more – soaring up to 30 feet high. The train and carousel are open, and the train route is decorated with myriad lights.
Attend on Wednesday through Sunday nights from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. through Jan. 18. Buy tickets online until 2 p.m. the day of the event. Train or carousel tickets are $3.50 for one ride per person. Masks are required.
Inviting big and little chefs to cooking school
Looking for a neat home-school activity and a way to expand your youngster’s culinary talents? Consider a cooking lesson at Publix Aprons Cooking School. You and your child will work together to make a delicious meal. On the Jan. 9 menu: pumpkin pie spiced buttermilk biscuits; shredded chicken and white bean chili; loaded roasted baby potato salad and a s’more trifle. The class is a superb start for children who are learning basic kitchen skills.
“Little” chefs must be ages 5 to 12, and “big” chefs must be at least 18 years old.

Throughout January, enjoy exclusive exhibitions by famed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, and paintings and memorable photos by fashion designer and socialite Gloria Vanderbilt at the Huntsville Museum of Art.
While Kahlo died before she was 50 years old, her life and talents continue to inspire art admirers and artists alike. The exhibit is a tribute to Kahlo by more than 95 international artists who admire her work and reinterpret many aspects of her life in an array of media.
