You couldn’t blame Zion Webb for volunteering to make a second trip to Tennessee in as many weeks. The Jacksonville State quarterback definitely found the most recent trip to his liking as it yielded his selection as Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

The redshirt junior led the Gamecocks to a 38-16 win at Tennessee State last Sunday in just the second start of his career. Webb totaled 280 passing yards and a career-high three touchdowns on 21 completions against the Tigers. The Phenix City native also gained 18 yards on five carries as Jax State improved to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in league play this spring.

JSU, No. 10 in the latest STATS Football Championship Subdivision national ranking, wraps up its two-game road swing Sunday when it returns to Tennessee to face UT Martin (1-1, 1-1 in OVC) at Stewart Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

West Alabama’s Derrick Underwood rushed for a career-high 148 yards last week. This week the Tigers travel to Mobile to face Savannah State in the Gulf Coast Challenge. (West Alabama Athletics)

West Alabama vs. Savannah State (Gulf Coast Challenge): The Tigers (1-0) brushed off any rust from not having played in 475 days when they topped Limestone 27-17 last week. Derrick Underwood rushed for a career-high 148 yards on 23 carries and Tyriq Martin caught a career-best 10 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown to highlight the day for the Tiger offense. Quarterback Jack McDaniels completed 21 of 36 throws for two TDs and was intercepted once on a tipped ball. UWA looks to complete its two-game season at 4 p.m. Saturday at Mobile’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Wofford at Samford: For the second time in as many weeks, the Bulldogs will face a nationally ranked foe when the No. 20 Terriers, the defending Southern Conference champions, visit Seibert Stadium at noon on Saturday. Samford (1-2 overall, 1-2 SoCon) is coming off a heartbreaking 44-37 overtime loss at No. 17 Furman last Saturday in Greenville, South Carolina.

Wofford (1-1, 1-1 SoCon) is coming off an idle week in which the Terriers missed their matchup at East Tennessee State due to COVID-19 protocols. Wofford was held to 199 yards of total offense en route to a 24-13 loss at Chattanooga in its last outing.

Huntingdon at Brevard: The last time Huntingdon (1-0) faced the Tornados (1-1), a pair of Hawks earned USA South Player of the Week honors in their 26-18 victory. Sophomore linebacker Casey Peppers recorded nine tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery and one interception to claim Football Defensive Player of the Week honors. Cole Starr, a junior kicker from Pelham, made all four of his field goal attempts and two extra points as he was tabbed Football Special Teams Player of the Week. The rematch will be at noon central on Saturday.

Alabama A&M (idle): The Bulldogs finally got on the field this spring, stepping out of the Southwestern Athletic Conference to throttle South Carolina State 31-7 last Saturday. That made A&M 2-0 this spring, 1-0 in the SWAC courtesy of a forfeit by Alcorn State, which opted not to play this season. Coach Connell Maynor’s team awaits its trip to Texas for a noon game on March 20 at Prairie View A&M.

Alabama State (idle): The Hornets (1-1) evened their record in the spring 2021 season despite having not played last week. ASU notched a win by forfeit with Alcorn State having opted out for the season. The Hornets next play at 2 p.m. on March 20, hosting Jackson State.
