Rare 45% hatched tornado risk on latest Storm Prediction Center outlook for parts of Alabama

Today’s severe weather risk is about as high as it can get across parts of Alabama, according to the latest Storm Prediction Center outlook.

The SPC has added a 45% hatched tornado risk area across eastern Mississippi and western Alabama in addition to the large 30% and 15% risk areas also outlooked. The entire state is in at least a 10% risk.

The percentage refers to the possibility that a tornado will pass within 25 miles of any point in that risk area. The highest percentage the SPC will issue on a same-day outlook is 60%.

The “hatched” refers to the threat for significant EF2 or greater tornadoes. Nearly all of Alabama is in the hatched risk area. You can see it on the main SPC tornado probability graphic.

Just another indication of how serious this event is.
