Opera Birmingham goes live

Set sail with “The Pirates of Penzance,” a classic comedy that boasts one of the most famous patter songs in opera and musical theater history on April 10-11 at the Avondale Amphitheater. The show will feature an outstanding local cast, along with the Opera Birmingham Chorus and Samford Opera. The production will be presented in an outdoor, open-air setting following COVID-19 safety protocols. For the health of patrons, staff and performers, masks are required and social distancing will be in effect. To reduce touch points, tickets will be digitally scanned at the entrance and QR codes and links will be provided to access the program digitally. Performance length is nearly one hour and sung as written in English. Tickets will go on sale Friday, March 26 for live performances.

Bellingrath Gardens and Home

Hop on down to the Gardens in Theodore for some “eggstra” special Easter fun Saturday, March 27 from 9 a.m. to noon. Bellingrath will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt on the Great Lawn with thousands of Easter eggs scattered for children to fill their baskets in a noncompetitive, socially distanced setting. There will be hunts for different age groups, as well as prizes, candy and “eggtivities.”

Words and Music

Celebrate Words and Music with the city of Prattville March 25-26 at 7 p.m. as a virtual event featuring songs and the stories behind them by Abigail Douglas, a River Region native. The Nashville-based singer and songwriter is a folk rock and alternative artist who grew up cutting her teeth in the Alabama music scene. Get a peek into her songwriting process and her upcoming EP. Spring Serenades Virtual Concert

These special never-before-seen performances have been carefully produced and captured during this unusual season by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Each presentation will be available to view for a little more than a week. Spring Serenades include Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, Bohemian Serenade, Cinematic Spring and more. Looking for live entertainment this weekend? Check out The Orange Constant and Manic Vision and Okey Dokey with Resort Realism at Avondale Brewing in Birmingham. Purchase tickets here for The Orange Constant and Manic Vision show on Friday, March 26. Purchase tickets here for the Okey Dokey with Resort Realism show on Saturday, March 27. Only a small percentage of tickets will be sold for these shows. Tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests are welcome to bring lawn chairs but are asked to not gather in front of the stage and to stay socially distanced from other groups.

Youth Art Month showcase

The Alabama Center for the Arts in Decatur is celebrating Youth Art Month, a yearly showcase of talent in visual arts. The annual showcase of young talent will feature 106 pieces of art by K-12 students, in coordination with school art teachers in Morgan County including area city, county and private schools. The show runs through Tuesday, March 30. Youth Art Month encourages support for quality school art programs and promotes art material safety. Administered by the Council for Art Education, the program helps children of all ages develop problem solving, observation and communication skills while enhancing their creativity. The event is sponsored by the Alabama Center for the Arts and the Carnegie Visual Arts Center, with artist awards to be given by Daybreak Rotary Club of Decatur. The Carnegie provides educational and cultural opportunities to the Decatur area and strives to encourage greater involvement in art at all levels and ages. Its children’s art education program promotes creativity via hands-on activities. Additionally, a variety of other programs, events and collections are offered for all ages. Birmingham Civil Rights Institute has taped interviews

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) presents the BCRI Oral History Collection of many exceptional leaders of the civil rights movement. The collection contains more than 600 interviews on VHS and mini-digital video tapes and is still growing. Digitization began in 2019 and the site launched in 2020. Digitized interviews will be added to the site as they are processed. Check out, for Women’s History Month, interviews with LaVerne Revis Martin, Mary Streeter Perry and Annetta Nunn.

Alabama Ballet

Tickets are on sale for Alabama Ballet’s “Romeo & Juliet.” Performances are April 23-25 at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex, choreographed by Roger VanFleteren, associate artistic director and resident choreographer of Alabama Ballet. The ballet, based on Shakespeare’s tragedy, is known for its breathless pas de deux, dramatic emotions and tragic tale. Faithful to Shakespeare’s original text, the ballet follows the fate of the star-crossed lovers from their first meeting to their untimely, tragic deaths. “Romeo & Juliet” is likely the world’s best-known love story, and the ballet version is set to Prokofiev’s dramatic score, widely recognized as a masterpiece of 20th-century music.

Tulips at American Village

Festival of Tulips at American Village in Montevallo will be entirely outdoors with safety measures in place. New varieties and blends include City of Vancouver, Wheels Up, Yellow Cubed Mira Mira, Globo Rojo and Judy Beauty. Admission is $5. Tulips including the bulb are $1.50 each plus tax. Cahaba Brewing Company

“Pour Us Another: Celebrating Womxn and Craft Beer” will return Sunday, March 28 to Cahaba Brewing. The event will showcase women in the craft beer industry among women-owned food trucks, vendors and female entertainers. There will be a panel discussion moderated by Sarah Ferguson of Redmont Distilling featuring Ashley Monroe, Trimtab Brewing; Rylie Hightower, The Lumbar; and Kayla Stinnett, Cahaba Brewing, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Follow the event on Facebook to learn more. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama. There is no admission charge.
