James Spann: Alabama stays dry through Tuesday with warm afternoons
James Spann forecasts a quiet start to the Alabama work week from Alabama NewsCenter on Vimeo.
BIG WARM-UP TODAY: The sky is clear across Alabama early this morning with many communities in the 40s around daybreak. Look for a big warm-up today; temperatures reach the low 80s this afternoon with a sunny sky. A few spots could even see mid 80s, making it one of the warmest days so far this year. We stay warm and dry Tuesday; with a partly sunny sky temperatures will return to the low 80s by afternoon.
MIDWEEK SHOWERS: A disturbance will bring a chance of showers to the state Wednesday. Some thunder is possible, but this time, thankfully, there is no risk of severe thunderstorms. The heaviest rain will be over the southern half of the state, where moisture is deeper; amounts for north Alabama will be less than one-half inch. The day will be cooler, with highs in the mid 70s.
THURSDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: For now we expect dry weather Thursday and Friday. With a mix of sun and clouds we project highs between 65 and 69 degrees, which is about 7-10 degrees below average for mid-April in Alabama. A disturbance will bring the chance of some light rain to the state Friday night, followed by a dry weekend. With a partly sunny sky the high Saturday and Sunday will be close to 70 degrees.
NEXT WEEK: Global models continue to suggest a relatively quiet pattern with little, if any, rain through the week along with temperatures at or below seasonal averages, but no sign of any late-season freeze. There is a high probability the next freeze for most of Alabama will come in late October or November.
ON THIS DATE IN 1945: A series of significant tornadoes raked Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois. Antlers, Oklahoma, was nearly obliterated by a massive F5 tornado that zigzagged from southwest to northeast across the town. Sixty-nine people died in the twister. Another tornado killed eight people in Oklahoma City. The disaster was overshadowed by the loss of President Franklin Roosevelt, who died suddenly at his vacation home at Warm Springs, Georgia.
ON THIS DATE ONE YEAR AGO: The 2020 Easter tornado outbreak was underway. During the two-day outbreak, 140 tornadoes touched down across 10 states, inflicting widespread and locally catastrophic damage. The strongest tornado was rated high-end EF4 and occurred in southern Mississippi, producing estimated winds of 190 mph, reaching a width of 2.25 miles and causing eight deaths. In Alabama, more than two dozen tornadoes touched down.
