James Spann: Warm Tuesday, showers Wednesday for Alabama
SUNNY, WARM AFTERNOON: Temperatures are between 80 and 85 degrees across Alabama this afternoon with a cloudless sky. The average high for April 12 at Birmingham is 75. Tonight will be clear with a low mostly in the mid to upper 50s.
The weather Tuesday stays warm and dry. With a partly sunny sky we expect a high in the mid 80s; for many communities it will be the warmest day so far this year. Clouds will increase Tuesday night.
SHOWERS RETURN: Wednesday will be cloudy and cooler, and a disturbance will bring potential for a few rain showers to the northern half of the state. But the most widespread and heaviest rain will come over the southern counties, where some thunder is possible. On the positive side, severe thunderstorms are not expected. The high Wednesday will be in the mid 70s, right at the seasonal average.
North and central Alabama will be dry and cooler Thursday, with gradual clearing possible and highs in the upper 60s. Showers will remain possible, however, over the southern quarter of the state. Another disturbance will keep the chance of rain in the forecast for south Alabama Friday, and we will mention a chance of rain statewide Friday night. Moisture will be limited, and rain amounts should be on the light side.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Looks like clouds will linger over the state Saturday and some scattered light rain can’t be ruled out, but not an all-day rain or a washout. The sky becomes partly sunny Sunday as drier air returns to the state; highs over the weekend will be between 67 and 70 degrees.
NEXT WEEK: There are still no signals of any severe weather from global models for now. Much of the week will be dry with seasonal temperatures.
ON THIS DATE IN 1945: A series of significant tornadoes raked Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois. Antlers, Oklahoma, was nearly obliterated by a massive F5 tornado that zigzagged from southwest to northeast across the town. Sixty-nine people died in the twister. Another tornado killed eight people in Oklahoma City. The disaster was overshadowed by the loss of President Franklin Roosevelt, who died suddenly at his vacation home at Warm Springs, Georgia.
ON THIS DATE ONE YEAR AGO: The 2020 Easter tornado outbreak was underway. During the two-day outbreak, 140 tornadoes touched down across 10 states, inflicting widespread and locally catastrophic damage. The strongest tornado was rated high-end EF4 and occurred in southern Mississippi, producing estimated winds of 190 mph, reaching a width of 2.25 miles and causing eight deaths. In Alabama, more than two dozen tornadoes touched down.
