James Spann: Classic summer mix of sun, scattered storms for Alabama

RADAR CHECK: We have a number of random, scattered showers and thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon. Stronger storms are producing heavy rain and frequent lightning, but in some places the sky is mostly sunny. Temperatures are mostly in the 80s, and scattered storms will fade after sunset.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Warm, humid weather will continue over the weekend. Expect a partly sunny sky both days with the usual threat of random, scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Odds of any one spot getting wet both days are 35-45%, and highs will be in the mid to upper 80s, which is below average for mid-July in Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: A trough will bring an increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms Monday; then the rest of the week should feature the usual summer mix of sun and scattered showers and storms, most active during the afternoon and evening hours. Highs through the week will be generally in the upper 80s.

TROPICS: Elsa has become post-tropical over the New England coast this afternoon. It will move into the Canadian Maritimes over the weekend. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet; it is covered mostly by dry, dusty air from Africa. Tropical storm formation is not expected through the middle of next week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Hurricane Bob was born in the Gulf of Mexico, becoming the first Atlantic hurricane to be given a male name.

ON THIS DATE IN 2007: The Argentine capital experiences its first major snowfall since June 22, 1918, as wet snow spreads a thin white mantle over the area. The storm hits on Argentina’s Independence Day holiday, thus adding to a festive air. Thousands of Argentines cheer the event, throwing snowballs in the streets.
