Just like finding a restaurant in a historic hosiery mill is unexpected, so, too, are the twists on the menu when it comes to Vintage 1889 Café.

Husband and wife Dr. Steve and Lynn Brewer opened Vintage 1889 in the Big Mill building in Fort Payne with plans to present classic sandwiches in a fresh way. That is most evident with the Vintage Cuban.

“People rave about our Cuban sandwich just because it’s different,” said Lynn. “Don’t expect a traditional Cuban sandwich.”

There’s enough smoked pork, ham and swiss cheese to put it in the Cuban sandwich category. But the key difference in the Vintage Cuban is Steve’s special sauce instead of the classic mustard.

It’s special enough to earn a spot on the Alabama Tourism Department’s list of 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama.
