Alabama-built vehicles help Hyundai, Honda to successful years
Hyundai and Honda posted sales growth in 2021, helped by the popularity of Alabama-built vehicles that kept rolling off car lots across the country.
The automakers reported year-end sales results Tuesday, noting that computer chip and other parts shortages affected inventories in the latter half of 2021.
Still, sales were strong enough to surpass the pandemic-hampered 2020 sales declines.
For Hyundai, 2021 set an all-time annual retail sales record in the U.S., aided by sales growth in every model built at its Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) plant and a new vehicle launched at the plant this past year – the Santa Cruz pickup.
The Tucson established a new annual sales record for the model.
Hyundai Motor America said December sales were down 23% and fourth-quarter sales were down 15% compared to last year. That wasn’t enough to completely deflate sales from earlier in the year.
Randy Parker, senior vice president of National Sales for Hyundai Motor America, said “2021 was a highly-successful year for the Hyundai brand and our retail partners. We navigated a variety of challenges and sold the most retail units in our history, increasing our retail market share nearly a full point. Shopping activity and consumer interest in our product portfolio remains high, and we are focused on meeting that demand in 2022 and continuing our ascent in the market.”
The four vehicles produced at Honda Manufacturing of Alabama also saw year-over-year sales growth with the exception of the Odyssey minivan.
Total sales for American Honda were down 23% in December.
“All things considered, we had a very successful 2021 with record sales of light trucks and electrified vehicles coupled with incredible demand, especially for all-new models like the Civic and Acura MDX,” said Dave Gardner, executive vice president of National Operations at American Honda. “While we’re not out of the woods yet with supply issues or the global pandemic, I thank our procurement and production team, suppliers and dealers for braving the difficult obstacles to get products to our customers at this unprecedented time.”
