James Spann forecasts a cold end for the Alabama work week from Alabama NewsCenter on Vimeo.

RADAR CHECK: Rain is still falling early this morning south of I-59… it will end from the northwest over the next few hours, and by afternoon the rain will be confined to the southeast counties of the state. The rest of the day will be cloudy, breezy, and cold with temperatures holding in the 30s north of Birmingham. Dothan is still reporting 65 degrees around daybreak, but the cold air will reach the southeast part of the state by mid-morning with falling temperatures.

The sky will clear tonight, and we are forecasting a low early tomorrow in the 22-26 degree range. Look for sunny days over the weekend with a warming trend… the high tomorrow will be in the mid 40s, followed by mid to upper 50s Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: For most of Alabama the week will be dry with seasonal temperatures. A disturbance will bring some risk of a little light rain to Mobile and Baldwin counties Monday, otherwise expect partly to mostly sunny days and fair nights with highs mostly in the 50s and lows mostly in the 30s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

HALE COUNTY TORNADO: NWS survey teams will be in West Alabama today to determine the EF rating of the tornado that moved through western Hale County, killing one person and critically including three others near Sawyerville (west of Greensboro). The same parent thunderstorm produced damage to the west, in Sumter County as well.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: A massive nor’easter pounded areas from the southern Mid-Atlantic to northern New England. It would be the only significant storm in the 94-95 winter season. Over 20 inches of snow buried parts of upstate New York. Wind chills dropped as cold as 40 degrees below zero. Behind the storm, arctic air crossing the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes produced intense lake effect squalls for nearly two weeks from the 4th through the 14th. Snowfall totals for the storm ranged from near two to seven feet.

ON THIS DATE IN 2011: A winter storm settled four to six inches of snow over northern Texas, including Dallas, just days before the Super Bowl between the Pittsburg Steelers and the Green Bay Packers.
