James Spann: Dry days, warming trend ahead for Alabama

James Spann forecasts warming weather for Alabama from Alabama NewsCenter on Vimeo.

COLD START: Temperatures were between 24 and 32 degrees across the northern half of the state early this morning, with mid 30s down to Mobile. Expect a sun-filled sky today with a high in the mid to upper 50s; the average high for Birmingham on Feb. 8 is 58.

Dry weather continues through Friday with a warming trend; look for a high in the low 60s Wednesday, followed by mid 60s Thursday and Friday with sunny days and fair nights.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday will be partly sunny with a high between 56 and 63 degrees. A cold front will pass through Saturday night with an increase in clouds, but moisture will be very limited and it still looks like it won’t produce any meaningful precipitation — maybe a sprinkle or flurry, but nothing more. Sunday will be sharply colder with a clearing sky; the high will drop into the 40- to 45-degree range across north and central Alabama with a brisk north wind.

NEXT WEEK: Monday morning will be cold, with a low well down in the 20s; then we warm into the low 50s Monday afternoon with a good supply of sunshine. Dry weather continues Tuesday and Wednesday with a warming trend; temperatures will be close to 60 degrees by Wednesday afternoon. Rain will likely return by Thursday ahead of the next cold front.ON THIS DATE IN 1989: Mammoth traffic jams occurred in the Los Angeles area as freak snow struck California. The snow was reported from the beaches of Malibu to the desert around Palm Springs.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Snow fell on the Jordanian capital and surrounding regions, blocking roads and closing schools. Parts of northern Iran and Tehran were paralyzed after being hit by several days of record snowfall, with dozens of flights canceled and critical roads also cut off.

ON THIS DATE IN 2010: Parts of the Tennessee Valley saw up to 6 inches of snow; the heaviest snow was over much of Lauderdale County around Muscle Shoals.
