Scott Martin: Mainly dry day for Alabama; showers return late tonight

THIS WEEKEND: Much of Saturday will be dry, but we’ll continue to have partly to mostly cloudy skies across Alabama. A shortwave will move through the state late into the day, through the nighttime and overnight. Showers will become possible over the northern third of the state by midnight, nothing too heavy and no thunder expected. Highs will be in the upper 40s to the lower 70s from northwest to southeast.

A surface low will have formed on the shortwave over central Georgia Sunday morning that will continue to keep showers possible in Alabama during the day. Eventually the shortwave moves farther away and rain chances will end before sunset. Highs will be in the upper 40s to the upper 60s from northwest to southeast.

NEXT WEEK: Ridging starts to set up and will begin to build over the southeast on Monday. That will bring plenty of sunshine and warmer temperatures to much of Alabama. Highs will top out in the upper 50s to the mid 60s. The warming trend and sunny weather continues Tuesday, as highs reach the lower 60s to close to 70. Same story on Wednesday — plenty of sunshine with highs in the upper 60s to the lower 70s.

We continue on the eastern side of ridging that will continue to bring nice, warm weather to Alabama on Thursday. Highs will be in the upper 60s to the upper 70s. We’ll be even warmer on Friday, with highs in the lower 70s to the lower 80s underneath plenty of sunshine.

NEXT WEEKEND: Decent weather will continue next Saturday, but a system will build off to our west that will eventually move into Alabama and become stationary over the northern two-thirds of the state on Sunday. That will bring showers and maybe a couple of thunderstorms back into the forecast. For now, much of the instability will be over Mississippi and back to the west, so severe weather doesn’t look likely at this point. But that is off in Voodoo Land past our seven-day forecast window. We’ll keep our eye on it. Highs will be in the lower 70s to the lower 80s on Saturday, and in the upper 60s to the lower 80s on Sunday.
