Scott Martin: Unsettled weather for Alabama through the week ahead

SATURDAY: A surface low will move across the upper Midwest today, dragging a cold front that will approach Alabama. We’ll have moisture advecting northward from the Gulf of Mexico, and with the heating of the day, we will see some scattered showers and thunderstorms by afternoon. Skies will be partly to mostly sunny, with highs in the lower to mid 80s.

SUNDAY: The front will start to move into Alabama Sunday morning, but it will be weakening. It will eventually wash out over the southern half of the state. We can expect scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms, but it should not be an all-day washout. Highs will be in the lower to mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK: We’ll keep a chance of scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms in the forecast Monday, as the front looks to move back northward as a warm front. Skies will be mostly sunny, with highs in the mid to upper 80s for most places.

While the Global Forecast System is not showing shower activity over Alabama Tuesday afternoon, we can’t rule out a few scattered showers and storms during the afternoon to early evening as we’ll continue to have a good bit of humidity in place. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s for most.

Another cold front will try to push its way into northern Alabama Wednesday, bringing an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms mainly to the northern half of the state. Highs will be in the 80s.

Another frontal system will push in our direction Thursday, keeping the flow of moisture from the Gulf and keeping a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. Highs will be in the mid 80s to the lower 90s.

That system will move through central Alabama throughout the day Friday, bringing showers and thunderstorms. There will be some instability in place, so we can’t rule out a few strong storms, but it is too early to know whether severe weather will be possible. Highs will be in the 80s.
