Burrell works at Tuskegee University as the special assistant to the Board of Trustees. He said despite living in other states for more than a decade, the family atmosphere of Tuskegee drew him back to Alabama.

“I’m a graduate. Both of my parents are graduates of the university as well as my sister. I finished a degree in 2001. Did banking in Atlanta and New York, but something drew me back to Tuskegee in 2017. So, I tried to get away from Tuskegee, but something keeps drawing me back. I think it’s the family atmosphere. One of the things that any student or employee will tell you is that Tuskegee is more like a family.”
