Scott Martin: Heat builds in Alabama with little relief in sight
THIS WEEKEND: We are starting off today with some clouds out there, along with some patchy fog in a few areas. Skies will become mostly clear and a few isolated showers and storms will be possible this afternoon, mainly over southern Alabama. Highs will be in the upper 80s to the lower 90s.
Ridging takes hold of our pattern Sunday, allowing heat levels to start to rise. With higher dewpoints, some locations may approach heat advisory criteria as heat index values approach 105 degrees. Isolated afternoon showers and storms will be few and far between. Highs will be in the lower to mid 90s.
THE WORK WEEK AHEAD: Monday will be hot and humid with mostly sunny skies and only a very small chance of a few isolated afternoon showers and storms. Highs will be in the 90s. Again, we may be flirting with heat index values near 105 degrees.
Tuesday again will be mostly sunny, hot and humid. Only one or two isolated afternoon showers and storms will be possible. Highs will be in the 90s.
A little weakness in the ridge may allow for a few more isolated to scattered afternoon showers and storms on Wednesday, but, again, it will remain hot and humid with mostly sunny skies and highs in the 90s.
Thursday will be similar, with mostly sunny skies and a chance of isolated to scattered afternoon showers and storms. Highs will be in the 90s.
We may see a front try to work through the state on Friday, bringing an increase to our scattered shower and storm chances. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it will help with the temperatures, as highs will remain in the 90s.
HOT TEMPERATURES STICK AROUND: Temperatures through June 21 will remain similar, with highs in the mid to upper 90s and lows in the lower to mid 70s.
