Scott Martin: Sizzler for Alabama this weekend

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Today will be a scorcher across Alabama. The good news is that humidity will remain lower, so it won’t be unbearable. The bad news is that Jefferson and Shelby counties are under a code orange air quality alert through the day. Skies will be mostly sunny, but a stray shower or two may be possible over extreme southern Alabama. Highs will be in the upper 90s.

There will be no change in temperatures Sunday, but there will be just enough moisture in the air that we could see a few isolated to scattered showers and storms. Skies will be partly to mostly sunny with highs in the upper 90s.

THE WORK WEEK: The heat sticks with us, so the forecast pretty much stays the same on Monday. It will be mostly sunny with a small chance of a few isolated to scattered showers and storms. Highs will be in the mid to upper 90s.

Unfortunately, humidity levels start rising again on Tuesday, and heat advisories may need to be issued. The good news is that rain chances will be rising as well. We’ll have a decent chance of scattered showers and storms during the afternoon, with highs in the mid to upper 90s.

Scattered afternoon showers and storms will be likely on Wednesday as a surface front begins to slowly push its way toward Alabama. We may see a strong storm or two, but it’s too early to know whether severe weather is possible. Highs will be in the lower to mid 90s.

The front gets closer on Thursday, and showers and storms will be likely at times. Again, a strong storm or two will be possible. Highs will be in the upper 80s to the mid 90s.

The front will slowly work through much of the state on Friday, keeping rain and storms possible for the northern half and likely at times for the southern half. Drier air will start working into the state behind the front, lowering humidity levels. Highs will be in the upper 80s to the lower 90s.

TROPICS: Everything is quiet across the tropics for now, and tropical cyclone formation is not expected for the next seven days.
