James Spann: Lower humidity for Alabama this weekend; showers remain scarce

James Spann forecasts dry days, hot afternoons for Alabama Thursday and Friday from Alabama News Center on Vimeo.

HOT SUMMER WEATHER: Alabama’s weather won’t change much through Friday with mostly sunny, hot afternoons; highs will be between 91 and 95 degrees. Odds of any one place seeing a shower remain 10% or less as the dry pattern continues.

We are forecasting an air mass change over the weekend as dry, continental air drops in from the north. Humidity levels will be lower Saturday and Sunday, nights will be cooler and afternoon heat levels will come down a bit. Highs Saturday and Sunday will be between 88 and 92 degrees, with lows in the 60s by daybreak Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: Generally dry weather continues Monday and Tuesday, but we will bring in a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms over the latter half of the week as moisture levels begin to rise. Highs through the week will be generally in the low 90s, right at seasonal averages for mid-August.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Debby, with sustained winds of 50 mph, is about 60 miles southwest of Myrtle Beach this morning. The system will move inland again later today and will finally accelerate to the northeast Friday and over the weekend. The system will be in eastern Canada by Saturday.Elsewhere, an area of low pressure could form in the central or western tropical Atlantic Ocean early next week. Some development of this system is possible while it approaches the Lesser Antilles during the early to middle part of next week and moves generally west-northwestward toward the Greater Antilles thereafter. The National Hurricane Center gives the system a 20% chance of development over the next seven days.

ON THIS DATE IN 2007: A tornado bounced across Staten Island and Brooklyn, New York, ripping off roofs and damaging dozens of buildings. The EF-2 twister hopscotched through Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge and Sunset Park neighborhoods around 6:30 a.m.
