As part of its commitment to developing the state’s workforce, Alabama Power is expanding its partnerships for lineworker training, with programs now being offered in Birmingham and Mobile. Through partnerships with community colleges, the company is cultivating a workforce pipeline of skilled workers prepared for meaningful careers in the utility industry.

Through the pre-apprenticeship programs, students learn the fundamentals of electricity, as well as the math and science needed to work on power lines. In addition to classroom instruction, students receive hands-on practice in an outdoor learning laboratory, honing their new skills so they are job-ready upon graduation.

In its second year, the Lineworker Training Program at Bishop State Community College in Mobile offers a 9-week course. Bishop State graduated 23 students from the spring 2020 program, all of whom received job placements.

Given the success in Mobile, programs are now being offered at Jefferson State Community College and Lawson State Community College in the Birmingham area.

Registration is underway, with classes beginning in January 2021.
