We don’t want to focus too much on the risk categories today, because it really doesn’t matter if you’re in the high or moderate category. Impacts may be very similar.

But it is interesting to note that the latest Storm Prediction Center Outlook has expanded the High Risk (5 out of 5) threat category eastward to include the Birmingham metro area.

That is definitely in line with the latest model data this morning.

High Risk Outlook issuances by the SPC are very rare. The last one was on May 20, 2019, for parts of Oklahoma and Texas. There has not been one in Alabama since April 28, 2014. On that date, a significant tornado outbreak affected much of north and central Alabama on the 28th and 29th.

There have been only four High Risk Outlook days in our state since 2010.
