A spa isn’t the typical place you expect to see children running around.
But on Saturday, Aug. 6, Nova Essence Medispa in Hoover’s Patton Creek community was filled with the pitter-patter of children’s feet, the whir of hair trimmers and the alternating buzz and sizzle of hair dryers and curling irons.
On Tax Free Weekend, parents stopped in with their children for refreshments, gifts and other freebies (including hairstyles and haircuts) between shopping trips for school necessities.
It marked the first time the spa hosted the back-to-school event.
“This was a tremendous opportunity to help families in our community and we could not have done it without the support of local businesses and our volunteers,” said Dr. Nova Law. With the stress of back-to-school shopping, we hoped to provide some relief for parents.”
Children and parents nibbled on popcorn and snow cones during the day. Face painting was also available for the younger kids.
One of the sponsors, Dr. Alexia Vaughn of Advanced Eye Care, provided free eye exams for children.
“We like to remind parents to have their children’s eyes screened so they can have the best chance of success as they go back into the classroom. ”
Other sponsors for the event included Carmike Movie Theater, Barnes and Noble and Everything Taylored treats.
This was the first year for the event at the Medispa, but it won’t be the last. Law says this will be an annual community event.
