In recognition of the start of hurricane season 2015, we’re revisiting some of the major storms that have affected the Gulf region over the past 90 years. Today, we take a look at Hurricane Agnes.
Hurricane Agnes
Landfall: June 19, 1972
Level: Category 1
U.S. Deaths: 130 *
Highest wind level: 85 mph
Agnes made landfall on the Florida panhandle, causing high tides and spawning more than a dozen tornadoes. But it did most of its damage inland as a tropical storm. More than 100 lives were lost due to flooding; 100,000 people fled their homes in Pennsylvania alone. Miles of railroad were destroyed and the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem was heavily damaged.
