The Little House of ‘what-nots,’ antiques in Moody

Running her country store is pure joy for Linda Hancock, who earlier owned a gas station with her husband.
Visitors to The Little House country store get a taste of all their favorites: day-old eggs from country-raised hens, raw honey and down-to-earth conversation.
Linda and Jack Hancock have lots of regular customers coming into their quaint, small shop in Moody, Ala.
The picturesque, log-cabin store at 1950 M.A. Lee Drive draws curious passersby, as well as the “regulars” seeking their weekly supply of farm-fresh eggs. Open from Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the store is less than 100 yards from the family home.

“We’ve just got some good customers,” said Linda Hancock, who opened the small business with her husband 11 years ago. “We enjoy talking to people. We have people stop in from everywhere.”
The home decor store has a bounty of unexpected treasures. Indeed, the writer found a Royal Doulton soup tureen, in the Old Country Roses pattern, for a fraction of the retail price at department stores. No space is wasted: Every spot is filled with an array of antiques, candles, homemade jewelry, old dishes and linens, and other selections.

Hancock has ventured outside Alabama seeking unique items for The Little House.
Three vintage Hoosier cabinets, circa 1940, are priced from $275 to $345. Hancock’s sister, Cookie Taylor, supplies about 12 dozen eggs weekly, as well as unique, handmade jewelry.
The “honey man,” Hancock’s longtime neighbor who lives across the creek, provides honey priced at $12.75 a jar. He robs the hives in June or July. The raw honey is so popular, Hancock said, that she usually runs out of the precious stuff before the next harvest.
Always on the lookout for items for the store, Hancock said, “I go to yard and estate sales.” Venturing to a yard sale in Georgia, she found an old electric stove that’s now for sale.
“It’s just a fun little place to be. I don’t have to buy gas to get to and from work,” Hancock added, with a chuckle. For more information about The Little House, call 205.640.1287.
