James Spann: Warmer tomorrow and Friday; colder this weekend

DRY, COLD WINTER DAY: Temperatures are generally in the upper 30s and low 40s across North Central Alabama this afternoon with a good supply of sunshine. Up north, clouds have moved into the Tennessee Valley, and we even note some light snow showing up on radar…

But no worries; the air over North Alabama is extremely dry, and most all of this precipitation is not reaching the ground. Most of the state will be mostly fair and cold tonight with a low in the 26-30 degree range.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: A warming trend headlines the forecast. Expect a partly sunny sky both days; we reach the mid 50s tomorrow, and Friday’s high will be close to 60 degrees. A cold front then passes through in dry fashion Friday night.

MORE COLD AIR FOR THE WEEKEND: Temperatures will drop about 20 degrees Saturday; the high will be close to 40, despite a good supply of sunshine. Then, we drop down into the low 20s early Sunday morning, followed by a high near 50 degrees Sunday afternoon. The air stays dry and the sky will be mostly sunny, although clouds will move in Sunday night.

EARLY NEXT WEEK: Rain is likely across Alabama Monday; models have trended warmer, and it looks like any winter weather mischief early in the day will be confined to the far northern counties of the state, and even there the threat is somewhat marginal. Highest risk of icy travel will be east of Alabama, over North Georgia, where cold air damming (CAD) will bring colder surface temperatures and the risk of freezing rain.

Drier air returns Tuesday, and we begin to warm up nicely by mid-week with highs in the 60s by Wednesday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details…
